How to Prepare for the CASPer Test

How to Prepare for the CASPer Test

Are you wondering how to prepare for the CASPer test? More medical schools are now requiring candidates to take this test. The CASPer is an online test used to measure personal and professional characteristics required as a medical doctor. The test requires you to judge twelve individual scenarios and accurately provide your ethical response under a strict time limit.

Grades and knowledge do not provide an accurate gauge of reasoning, judgement and emotional abilities, so granting admission based on GPA alone may not capture a great doctor. You may be wondering how to pass the CASPer test and feeling the pressure, however, you can view this test positively. It is an opportunity to give a well-rounded example of the person you are as the final score is combined with your MCAT and GPA. Preparing for the CASPer is critical but we've got some great tips for you.

tips-and-tricks

1. Get Into The CASPer Mindset

The twelve scenarios presented in the CASPer are in written or video form. You are asked to read or watch the scenario and then complete three corresponding questions within five minutes. When preparing for the CASPer, imagine you are already in the medical field; the gravity of this profession, dealing with patients and difficult situations on a regular basis.  The level of professionalism, sensitivity and ethical reasoning you must hold is extremely high. Ensure you have a thorough understanding of the characteristics you will be expected to highlight in the CASPer test because after all, you will be required to demonstrate them every day in your dream career.

2. Research: High Yield Topics To Help You Prepare

The key to preparing for the CASPer is research and reference notes. When you click that big green “start” button, you are on a countdown to provide a clear, concise, and impressive answer. This process is all about getting in the right head space to answer the questions. Your understanding of the following topics and issues will guide you in evaluating the red flags for each CASPer scenario. Your research should include:

  • Your understanding of medical ethics such as patient confidentiality, non-maleficence, beneficence, and patient autonomy.
  • Any current events in relation to politics, policy, or economics that effect our health care system.
  • The values that you think are important as a medical professional and examples of when you displayed these values. Think about communication, integrity, leadership, empathy and cultural sensitivity.

There is no set answer on how to pass the CASPer test as the scenarios presented to you will not have an obvious right and wrong response. You are expected to highlight the validity of multiple perspectives. This may mean explaining your exact point of view and your actions to enforce it, as well as why someone could have an opposing view.  It shows maturity if you can see more than one side. Nothing is black and white, especially when dealing with patients.

3. Practice

When preparing for the CASPer, it is useful to become familiar with potential scenarios that you may be asked about. You can do this by:

  • Taking the sample test here
  • View the example scenarios on YouTube and Google ethical scenarios that you can read through and contemplate at your own pace.
  • Create a study group and discuss example scenarios. This is a great way to air perspectives and possibilities from multiple angles.
  • Have a chat to an existing medical professional about what ethical dilemmas they encounter in the field.
  • Finally, you can ask these experts who have taken CASPer before about additional tips and strategies to prepare for the big day.

Lastly, the basics of preparing for the CASPer test:

  • The test must be booked at least three days in advance and align with the current submission schedule. Make sure you are committed to the date you schedule. You must pay up front and there are no refunds or rescheduling.
  • Read the technical instructions regarding taking the test in detail. Check your system requirements and plan to use a reliable computer. Your internet connection must be fast enough to watch the videos. Plan to have only one browser window open and nothing else that will slow your computer. Keep in mind that you cannot copy and paste anything from another window into the CASPer test to save time.
  • Practice your typing accuracy and improving your words per minute speed. Although grammar and spelling are not scored, all of your answers must make sense and this is where having a reasonable typing speed comes in handy. If you can get the information down as quickly and accurately as possible, then any spare time can be spent analysing your answers. Keep in mind that this is an assessment of your personality including communication skills, so avoid any bad language, slang or inappropriate comments.
  • Ensure you know your notes inside out and be able to discuss those in details for each scenario. You will NOT have time to go through these notes, but preparing them can help you get in the mindset of answering these questions quickly.

This is our guide on how to prepare for the CASPer test and we hope that it helps you to set yourself up for success. Remember to run through practice scenarios, including typing and laying out your answer under a time limit and also remember to keep calm and pace yourself. You can do it!
